Supporting Those Who Protect Our Communities
Safe communities are built on trust, professionalism, and strong partnerships between residents and the men and women who answer the call during emergencies. Police officers, firefighters, paramedics, emergency dispatchers, correctional officers, and countless other first responders dedicate their lives to protecting our communities. They deserve leadership that supports them and recognizes the importance of the work they do every day.
Supporting first responders means providing them with the tools, training, and resources necessary to perform their jobs safely and effectively. It also means ensuring county government operates efficiently so emergency services are never hindered by unnecessary bureaucracy or poor management.
Public safety should never be viewed as a choice between supporting law enforcement and protecting civil liberties. We can do both. Communities are strongest when residents trust their first responders, and first responders know they have the support of the communities they serve.
Cook County also has an important responsibility within the criminal justice system. Justice delayed is justice denied, for victims, defendants, and the public alike. Our courts should operate efficiently so cases move forward in a timely manner while preserving fairness and due process. Violent offenders should be held accountable, victims deserve justice, and individuals who have paid their debt to society should have opportunities to rebuild their lives.
Transparency and accountability are essential to maintaining public confidence. Residents deserve to know that emergency services operate professionally and that government responds appropriately when mistakes occur. Accountability strengthens public trust and supports the overwhelming majority of first responders who serve honorably every day.
Public safety extends beyond responding to emergencies. It includes preparing for disasters, maintaining effective emergency communications, supporting public health responses, and ensuring county agencies work together when residents need them most.
Every resident deserves to feel safe in their home, neighborhood, workplace, and community. That requires leadership focused on practical solutions rather than political slogans.
As Cook County Board President, I will work to support first responders, improve the efficiency of county government, strengthen accountability, and promote policies that help keep every community safe.
