Personal Liberty

Freedom Without Exception

Freedom is the foundation of a healthy society. Every person deserves the opportunity to live their life, pursue their goals, and make personal decisions without unnecessary interference from government. I believe the role of government is to protect our rights, not dictate how we live our lives.

Throughout our nation’s history, progress has come from expanding freedom, not restricting it. Every generation has faced important questions about individual rights and personal autonomy. I believe Cook County should continue to respect those freedoms by ensuring government remains focused on its proper role: protecting the rights of its residents while allowing individuals to make their own choices.

Personal liberty means recognizing that people come from different backgrounds, hold different beliefs, and live different lives. Government should not favor one group over another or treat people differently because of who they are. Every resident deserves equal protection under the law and the same opportunity to live freely.

That commitment includes protecting the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals to live openly and without discrimination. It includes respecting reproductive freedom and recognizing that deeply personal medical decisions belong between individuals, their families, and their healthcare providers, not politicians. These are issues of individual liberty, personal responsibility, and limited government.

Privacy is another essential freedom. As technology becomes increasingly woven into our daily lives, government has access to more information than ever before. I believe residents should not have to surrender their privacy simply because technology makes surveillance easier. Cook County should carefully balance public safety with constitutional protections and respect for civil liberties.

Supporting personal liberty also means protecting due process and ensuring our justice system treats every individual fairly. Government must always respect constitutional rights, provide transparency, and remain accountable to the people it serves.

Freedom comes with responsibility. Individuals should be free to make their own choices while accepting the consequences of those choices. Government should step in only when necessary to protect the rights and safety of others, not to control peaceful, law-abiding people.
As Cook County Board President, I will work to ensure our government respects individual rights, protects civil liberties, and remembers that its purpose is to serve the people, not to control them.
